BUFFALO, N.Y. — Tomatoes that were almost ready to harvest early this week were unfortunately met with heavy rain on Tuesday.
Many tomatoes, including in some backyards in Amherst, were damaged by the heavy rainfall.
When tomatoes are ripening especially, and are hit with heavy rain, they can often split. Tuesday's rain of more than half an inch at the Buffalo Airport, didn't help the local tomato crop. This was after four days of no measurable rain, but at least many tomatoes dodged the heavy rain since it was scattered activity over Western New York.
It may be time to harvest the rest of the backyard produce, since frost advisories have already begun as of late this week in northern Pennsylvania, with upper 30s for the inland Southern Tier. October frost is almost here for Western New York.
