Every spring, the Midwest expects to experience some flooding along major waterways as snow melts and new rain falls. That’s not unlike what can happen in Western New York. But this year conditions are especially severe. Why? Find out in this week’s Heather’s Weather Whys.

Weeks after water began to rise, dozens of water level gauges in the Midwest are still reporting moderate to major flooding. Unfortunately, forecasts from the National Weather Service aren’t showing any near-term improvement.

Rainfall from a strong storm may have tipped the buckets for flooding in the region, but a couple of inches of water certainly doesn't produce such widespread impacts on its own. The flooding that’s submerged significant parts of Nebraska has been months in the making. It can be traced back to last fall. See how everything unfolded in this week’s Heather’s Weather Whys.
