Endless winter negatively affecting farmer's crops

The long-lasting snow is not good for local farmers and their crops.

ARCADE, NY — The winter isn't letting go and now many farmers are looking over their snow-covered fields and are worrying about their crops.

By now the fields would have fresh spring crops planted but instead, there's just snow.

Kent Miller, owner of Plato Dale Farm in Arcade, says they're having to plant additional crops in heated greenhouses since the ground is still frozen.

"Some crops, that would normally be planted directly into the field, we are planting in the green house for transplant at a later date, just to try and stay on track," Miller said. "Today, [we're] planting spinach inside instead of usually we would be planting that outside.

Miller says he's still expecting a delay in harvesting some crops including peas and spinach.

If the ground thaws soon, they can get all the crops in the field.

"We will have some long days in May to catch up... long hard days, especially when we are late like this... long days, long days," Miller said.
