High waves and rip-currents possible

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Now that the temperatures have warmed to summer-like levels, the beaches surrounding Lake Erie are becoming very enticing.

However, with strong winds off Lake Erie expected Tuesday, swimming is not recommended.

A Beach Hazards Statement was issued by the National Weather Service warning of dangerous rip-currents and high waves.

Swimmers are advised to stay out of the water, and even beachcombers to stay away from docks and jetties due to unexpected high waves and turbulent subsurface currents.

Water temperatures are also on the cool side, in the low 60s, so the water will be quite cold compared to the warmer air temperatures.

Swimming conditions may still be a little dangerous on Wednesday as well, before things settle down on Thursday.
