Construction markers have gone high-tech

BUFFALO, NY-- You see them, but you don't pay much attention to them.

What are we talking about? We're talking about those orange and white traffic barrels that mark off construction projects along highways.

Those barrels that alert you to construction work and block off work areas have a another purpose for road construction. They also help measure traffic and speed.

The traffic barrels being used on the I-290 construction project in the Town of Tonawanda are called 'iCones'. The New York State Department of Transportation says the iCones are used to gather traffic speeds and traffic density to relay information to electronic message boards.
