Higgins concerned about clean water rollback

Congressman Brian Higgins wrote a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concerning efforts to roll back environmental regulations.

NEW YORK — Congressman Brian Higgins says he's concerned that plans to roll back clean water standards across the country could really hurt Western New York.

Higgins wrote a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) urging them not to get rid of the rules that prevent pollution and agricultural runoff from getting into the water. Higgins says it will undo the years of work that's been done to clean up the Buffalo River.

"It's a waste of federal money, particularly the federal money the federal money that came into this community to clean up the Buffalo River, to physically remove the toxic chemicals that were allowed legally to be dumped into the Buffalo River," Higgins said.

Higgins is also concerned that more agricultural pollution in the water will lead to more of those algae blooms that can be deadly to pets, which was a concern across the country last summer.
