Sabres dumped by Ottawa, 5-2

Sabres captain Jack Eichel "not a playoff caliber effort."

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Mike Reilly scored the go-ahead goal 8:48 into the third period, and the Ottawa Senators snapped a seven-game road skid with a 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

Tyler Ennis had a goal and assist and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also scored for Ottawa, which had gone 0-4-3 on the road since a 5-2 win at Edmonton on Dec. 4. Mark Borowiecki sealed the victory by blocking Marcus Johansson's point shot and then banking the puck off the boards and scoring into an empty net with 2:06 remaining.

Sabres captain Jack Eichel scored his career-best 29th of the season and Sam Reinhart also scored for Buffalo, which was playing its first game following a 10-day layoff.

Eichel said after the game, "It's not good enough, I mean if we want to make the playoffs that's not a playoff caliber effort by us so, you know that, I know that, everyone in the room knows that."

Making matter worse for the Sabres goaltender Linus Ullmark was injured and left the game in the third period. He was helped off the ice and was not putting any weight on his right leg. Head coach Ralph Krueger said, "it's a lower body situation that will be looked at deeply tomorrow."

Tuesday night the Sabres started a stretch with nine of their next ten games on home ice. Thursday the Sabres are home against Montreal.
