Western New York ski resorts start making snow

Holimont, which is located in Ellicottville, will start making snow on Friday and will ramp up the snow pack Monday and Tuesday.

ELLICOTTVILLE, N.Y. — Nothing makes a ski resort happier than cold weather and snow.

This week and next, Mother Nature is taking care of the cold weather, while the ski resorts in Western New York will be taking care of the snow.

Holiday Valley will fire up their snow-making machines Thursday evening, so long as the temperatures stay cool and the air dry.

Holimont, which is located in Ellicottville, will start making snow on Friday and will ramp up the snow pack Monday and Tuesday.

Holimont uses snow guns that can create large amounts of snow if the temperatures are cold enough, which they will be this weekend and into next week.

Kissing Bridge will begin making snow on Friday as well, in preparation of their Open House and Fall Fest. Cold northerly winds on Friday will bring some lake effect snow showers which could add a little bit more to the totals through the end of the week. These showers are not expected to linger in any one place for too long.

The snow that falls today and Friday will not melt anytime soon. Highs on Friday will stay below freezing for most.
