Holiday Valley opens for 'preview weekend'

Holiday Valley will start their 62nd season a week early, as cold weather allowed them to start making snow earlier this month.

ELLICOTTVILLE, N.Y. — Holiday Valley announced on social media that they will open on November 23, a week earlier than anticipated.

The resort will operate three lifts for their "preview weekend" which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The resort will then close until after Thanksgiving and weather permitting, reopen on Friday Nov. 29.

The ski-resort began making snow November 7 and has been producing snow on 10 slopes using 230 snowguns operated by a computer. The resort says it has the largest snowmaking system of this kind in the East.

"With the cold temperatures we had ideal conditions last week and weekend to make a lot of snow, over 300 acre feet! We’ve let that snow cure and now we’re grooming it out to make a nice smooth skiing surface. This allows us to open a week ahead of schedule for a preview weekend,” President of Holiday Valley Dennis Eshbaugh said in a press release.

Reduced tickets will be available for the weekend: $45 adults, $35 juniors (ages 7-11) for eight hours; $42 adults, $32 juniors for four hours; and $28 for adults and $25 for juniors at night.

Lifts open include: Mardi Gras, Yodeler and Creekside Quad chairs.

Slopes open include: School Haus, Mardi Gras, Yodeler, Candy Cane, Crystal and Sugar Plum.

The preview weekend will only have parts of the resort open: McCarty's in the main lodge, Yodeler cafeteria (limited menu), and John Harvards will be open. Day care will not be available. Only beginner and private lessons will be offered.
