NEW YORK — With regular pheasant hunting season opening on October 19, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) opened a youth-only pheasant hunting weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

The hunt was only open to junior hunters between the ages of 12 years old and 15 years old, who were accompanied by a licensed adult hunter. The adult chaperones were not allowed to carry any firearms or take pheasants during this two day event.

Standard pheasant hunting regulations were in effect for all junior hunters, including the rule limiting hunters from taking more than two birds per day.

"The youth-only pheasant hunting weekend helps acclimate junior hunters to upland game bird hunting and provides a great opportunity for experienced hunters to share safe hunting values and skills with our future sportsmen and sportswomen," said Abby Snyder, the DEC Region 9 director.

Various pheasant stocking locations were set up across Western New York, including Allegany County, Cattaraugus County, Chautauqua County, Erie County, Niagara County, and Wyoming County.
