BUFFALO, N.Y.-- When the Buffalo Sabres new season begins, player Jack Eichel will be sporting a familiar number.

The Sabres announced that the forward will wear the number 9 on his jersey starting during the 2018-19 season.

Eichel posted on instagram on Friday that he was changing his number from 15 to 9 for the upcoming season.

New season, old number.

In a statement released from the Sabres, Eichel said, "For a long time, the number nine has always been a part of my identity as both a person and as a player. The opportunity opened up to switch and I felt it was the right time to make the change as I begin the next phase of my career as a Sabre."

Eichel wore the number 9 while at Boston University.

If you own a number 15 jersey, don't fret. The Sabres Store will offer a $49 credit the purchases of a new adult Eichel No. 9 jersey or $29 toward the purchase of a youth jersey.
