Josh Allen's running shows bigger issues with Bills offense

Josh Allen has 335 yards rushing in the past three games and passed LeSean McCoy as the team's leading rusher.

ORCHARD PARK, NY - For the third straight game, Josh Allen led the Bills in rushing with his 101 yards on the ground including a touchdown.

Allen passed LeSean McCoy as the team's leading rusher so far this season with 490 while McCoy has 479.

And while Allen's mobility can be impressive being able to extend drives with his feet, it also shows bigger issues with this offense.

Outside of him, there's been little production in the running game. Allen has 335 yards in the past three games while McCoy and Chris Ivory have 135. Granted, McCoy got hurt early against the Jets but even when he is healthy, this has been the case.

When Allen takes off, he exposes himself to some big, unnecessary hits and that's something head coach Sean McDermott touched on Monday afternoon.

"Josh is a mobile quarterback. Mobile quarterbacks, there’s a conversation about them every week. ‘Are they running too much? Are they not running enough? What happened to the quarterback run?’ So at the end of the day, we have to keep Josh upright. He took some hits yesterday that he can’t take and we’ve got to make sure we do a good job of protecting him. But Josh has to help himself out at times in being smart with the football, and the alarm clock in his mind has to go off, as well, in getting rid of the ball and living to play another down," McDermott explained.

After the game, McDermott said it's not healthy when your quarterback is your leading rusher week in and week out.

Another part of the problem is he too often has to scramble out of the pocket and that's on the offensive line.

While Allen did struggle in the passing game with two awful interceptions, throws he never should have thrown, Sunday's game showed he still needs help around him.
