Jim Kelly headed back to New York for check-up

Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly says he's headed for New York City to visit with doctors after "something came up" in his recovery from surgery last month in his fight against oral cancer.

Kelly spent Tuesday morning running a youth football clinic at St. John Fisher college in suburban Rochester. He met with the media during the session and spoke about his health.

"I don't know... every week it changes," he said. I'm headed back to New York City the second week of August. I'm not sure what's going on. I've got some things that I want to have looked at and then we'll go from there. I don't know whether I'm going to be there two days or four days or in and out."

Kelly didn't get more specific on the nature of the problem.

"Something came up. Just like anybody, you go through a broken leg and you've got to have check-ups... and if there's a little pain where you think there shouldn't be you've got to get it checked."

Kelly will be in Los Angeles Wednesday night to receive the Jimmy V award for Perseverance at the ESPY Awards.

Kelly says that he's "honored" to receive the award, and that he hopes to inspire others to "never give up."
