GAME BLOG: Jets defeat Bills, 27-23

It's a match-up of the third and seventh overall picks in the draft. The Jets and quarterback Sam Darnold visit Josh Allen and the Bills in the first meeting between the two rookies.

JETS AT BILLS - NEW ERA FIELD, ORCHARD PARK

FIRST QUARTER

The Bills march 73-yards on their opening drive. Josh Allen continued running the football at a franchise record pace rushing for 48-yards on four carries that included a 6-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Bills take an early 7-0 lead. The Bills defense forces a punt on the Jets opening drive. Allen continued running the ball on the Bills next drive and turned it over with the Jets recovering at the Buffalo 32. Just prior, Jets QB Sam Darnold limped to the locker room. This was his first game back after missing time with a sprained foot. The Jets kick a 47-yard field goal and get on the board trailing 7-0 with 4:34 left in the first quarter. The Bills put together another scoring drive that goes 75-yards in seven plays. Isaiah McKenzie caps it with a 15-yard run. Bills with a 14-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

The Jets get on the board again with a 10-play 43-yard drive. The Bills defense was strong in the red zone holding the Jets to a field goal. Bills lead 14-6 with 11:10 left in the half. The Bills keep moving the ball and Josh Allen continues to run well. They add a field goal after a trick play in the red zone comes up just short where Zay Jones couldn't complete a pass to Josh Allen who was open for a moment in the end zone. The Bills add a field goal and lead 17-6. The Jets get an 86-yard return from Andre Roberts on the ensuing kickoff. Trenton Cannon capped that with a four-yard touchdown run to trim the Bills lead to 17-13. The Bills turn it over again with Allen running for the left sidline and forcing a ball back to the middle of the field that was picked off. It was a rookie mistake by Allen. The Bills defense bailed him out forcing a punt. Stephen Hauschka's 49-yard field goal attempt was blocked at the end of the half, and Hauschka remained down at the teams left the field.

THIRD QUARTER

The Bills are able to recover a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half, and that leads to a Stephen Hauschka field goal to give the Bills a 20-13 lead early in the 3rd quarter. Darnold and the Jets were in position to score by much like Allen earlier in the game, Darnold threw back to the middle of the field from the right sideline and the ball was picked off by linebacker Tremaine Edmunds for Buffalo.

FOURTH QUARTER

The Jets are able to tie the game with an 11-play 85-yard drive capped by Sam Darnold throwing seven yards to Robbie Anderson for the touchdown. Darnold did an incredible job eluding the rush on the play and running back to the left side when delivering the ball. The Bills continue to struggle on special teams. Stephen Hauschka missed a 54-yard field goal with 7:49 left in the quarter. Allen drives the Bills into scoring position that included a 38-yard completion to Robert Foster. Hauschka kicked a 36-yard field goal with 2:31 left to give the Bills a 23-20 lead. Darnold drives the Jets down to the Bills one-yard line and is stopped short of the goal line. The Bills Matt Milano had to be carted off the field after injuring his leg on the play. New York's Elijah McGuire ran for a one-yard TD on 4th and goal to put the Jets up 27-23.
