Allen tops 400 yards passing as Bills win shootout over Dolphins

Bills QB Josh Allen threw for 417 yards and four touchdowns in a 31-28 win over the Miami Dolphins as Buffalo improves to 2-0.

BUFFALO BILLS AT MIAMI DOLPHINS - 1PM 

FIRST QUARTER

-The Bills offense goes three and out to start the day as Josh Allen misses a wide open Stefon Diggs on third down. 

-The Bills pass rush gets to Ryan Fitzpatrick on 3rd and 8 as he barely makes it back to the line of scrimmage.   Coverage in the secondary was  solid  as the Dolphins are forced to punt. 

-Allen leads a very impressive 11-play 97-yard drive making good use of the added weapons in the offense connecting with Reggie Gilliam for a 1-yard TD and a 7-0 lead. 

-The Dolphins respond with a 10-play 75-yard drive that included a disputed catch that set Miami up at the 2-yard line.  Ryan Fitzpatrick hit DeVante Parker for a 2-yard TD tying the game 7-7. 

SECOND QUARTER

-After a Dawson Knox fumble, the Bills defense forces a three and out. 

-Allen and the Buffalo offense put together a 5-play 84-yard drive capped by Allen to Stefon Diggs for a 22-yard TD, Diggs first as a Buffalo Bill.  Buffalo leads 14-7. 

-The Bills defense comes up with another stop after allowing the touchdown forcing another Miami punt. 

-The Bills offense puts together another scoring drive of 73-yards over 13-plays that ends with a 39-yard FG for rookie kicker Tyler Bass.  A significant kick for Bass who missed twice from inside 40-yards last week.  Bills take a 17-7 lead. 

-The Bills defense continues to play well.  Jerry Hughes came up with a big hit on Ryan Fitzpatrick on an incompletion.  The coverage was terrific on 3rd and 3 and Mario Addison finally got to Fitzpatrick for the sack. 

-After a Bills drive stalls... Ryan Fitzpatrick is able to put the Dolphins in field goal range and Jason Sanders connects on a 52-yard FG with :02 left in the first half.  Bills lead 17-10 at the half. 

THIRD QUARTER

-The second half was just a couple of plays old before play was suspended due to a lightning delay.

-The delay is officially timed at 36-minutes as play resumes. 

-The Dolphins move the ball effectively to start the half.  Tre White breaks up a pass on 3rd and 9, but Jason Sanders connects on a 45-yard FG to cut the Bills  lead to 17-13 early in the third. 

-Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins continue to throw effectively against Buffalo cornerbacks, targeting Levi Wallace in particular.  Miami had the ball first and goal with a chance to take the lead, but the Buffalo defense comes up large with a goal line stand.  Micah Hyde delivered with a key pass break-up on third and goal, and Miami's Preston Williams dropped what would have been a touchdown on 4th and goal.  

-The Bills offense goes three and out deep in their own territory.  Allen's pass is d deflected and almost picked off on third down.  The Bills punt and Miami starts its drive on the Bills 44-yard line. 

FOURTH QUARTER 

-Miami's offense finds the end zone this time at the end of a 10-play 44-yard drive.  Jordan Howard caps it with a 2-yard TD to give MIami a 20-17 lead. 

-Allen and the Bills offense respond with a 7-play 75-yard drive that featured Allen connecting with rookie receiver Gabriel Davis on 3rd and goal for a six-yard TD.  Buffalo is able to retake the lead 24-20. 

-The Bills defense is able to slow Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins down and give Buffalo the ball back, and that's when Allen and the offense strikes again going 71-yards in five plays and connecting with John Brown on a 46-yard TD to give the Bills the lead at 31-20.  In the process, Allen crosses 400-yards passing in a game for the first time in his career. 

-Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins are able to respond against the Buffalo defense driving 75-yards in nine plays and connecting with Mike Gesicki for an 8-yard touchdown and converting the two to Preston Williams to trail 31-28.

-The Bills are able to recover the onside kick and win the game 31-28 to improve to 2-0 on the year.
