Nine Catholic lay people plan symposium to “Restore Trust” in Buffalo Diocese

The group, called "Movement to Restore Trust," are hosting a panel discussion on how to reform, renew and heal the Catholic Diocese in Buffalo

A “respectful dialogue” has been scheduled on Wednesday, November 28th to “begin to reform, renew, and heal the [Catholic] Church in Buffalo.

The symposium will be held at Canisius College’s Montante Cultural center at 7:00pm, moderated by President John J. Hurley.

Put on by the Movement to Restore Trust-- which is the formal name of the initiative founded by nine Catholic lay people in the Buffalo Diocese—the symposium will feature the following panelists:

  • Kerry Robinson, the founding executive director and global ambassador of the Leadership Roundtable (https://leadershiproundtable.org/), an organization that promotes best practices and accountability regarding management issues in the U.S. Catholic Church.

  • Madeline E. Lacovara a retired therapist, working with adolescents and families in Washington, DC., former president of the Diocese of Bridgeport, CT inner city schools consortium, and a board member of the Jesuit Refugee Service, USA.

  • Fr. Matt Malone, S.J., a Jesuit and the editor in chief of America magazine, the Jesuit review of faith and culture.

  • Rev. Robert Zilliox, the pastor of St. Mary’s of Swormsville parish in East Amherst, a canon lawyer and former canonical adviser to Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone. Fr. Zilliox is a sex abuse survivor who was featured on the 60 Minutes report on the Buffalo Diocese in October 2018.
  • The event will include a moderated discussion among the panelists, with an opportunity to take questions from the audience.

    It’s open to the public but seating will be limited; doors open at 6:00pm.

    A live stream of the event will also be on the website, with an on-site stream available in the college’s Winter Student Center on Hughes Avenue for anyone who wants to participate in the Q&A session.

    A follow-up workshop will be held on Saturday, December 8th from 9:00am-Noon, featuring an open session for people to address their concerns about the ongoing scandal and to propose ideas for reform.
