Western New York reps stick to party lines on Trump impeachment

Democrat Brian Higgins voted yes on impeachment during the historic Wednesday night votes. Republican Tom Reed voted no.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A couple Western New York representatives voted Wednesday night on whether to impeach President Donald Trump.

Staying right along party lines, Democrat Brian Higgins voted yes on impeachment. Republican Tom Reed voted no.

2 On Your Side heard from both congressmen after the historic votes.

"I think it's sad for the nation, but it's constitutionally reaffirming," Higgins said by phone. "We have a separation and rule of law that are fundamental to our democracy, and Congress had an obligation tonight to vote affirmatively for the two articles of impeachment."

Congressman Reed was not available by phone but said in a statement that he voted no impeachment because he quote "never saw smoking gun evidence of high crimes worthy of impeachment."

State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy added in a statement, in part:

“Today will forever be remembered as the day when House Democrats subverted the will of the people and threw our country into turmoil to serve their own partisan interests. This sham impeachment is the weakest, thinnest, unjust attempt to remove a duly-elected President that is unprecedented in our country’s history," Langworthy said.
