Green Light Law goes into Effect across New York State

Auto bureaus prepare to process new license applications

BUFFALO, N.Y. — As the Green Light Law went into effect, it was business as usual in Erie County.

County Clerk Mickey Kearns made stops at every office today and said that six new license applications had been processed.

He told 2 On Your Side's Karys Belger he's not going to try and stop applications, but he's still not satified with the rollout of this law and what he feels was a lack of communication and training from the state.

"We’re all still trying to get our bearings together, even the applicants I’m sure so we’ll just continue, I said we’ll take this minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day and we’ll see how things go", Kearns said outside the Tonawanda office.

Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski told 2 On Your Side Over the phone that he shut down the Lockport Location to better train his staff and that applications would be accepted later in the week.

It was a different story in Genessee County. At the County Courthouse in Batavia, a few protestors hed signs and waved flags.

County Clerk Michael Cianfrini announced that he was putting a temporary hold on all new license applications until he could get further direction from the state.

"Until I get some more information, both from the state, from other county clerks with regard to their experiences just get some more guidance exactly what is expected of us," he told 2 On Your Side.

That means no new licenses will be processed at all in Genesee County but people looking to renew shouldn’t have any problems.

2 On Your Side also reached out to the Allegheny County Clerk. 2 On Your Side previously reported that he would not process license applications. He was not available for comment.
