Poloncarz wins Erie County Executive race

The Democrat and Lackawanna native won with 53.5 percent of the vote.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Incumbent Democrat Mark Poloncarz scored a win against Independence Party County Legislator Lynne Dixon in the Erie County Executive race.

Poloncarz, a Democrat and Lackawanna native, has 53.5 percent of the vote.

Poloncarz has served as county executive since 2012, when he defeated incumbent Chris Collins.

Dixon, an Erie County Legislator from Hamburg who is running on the Republican line, announced her campaign in February via Twitter. She is a member of the Independence Party and is running on the Republican line.

Dixon represents District 9, which includes Hamburg, Lackawanna, Blasdell and part of South Buffalo. She was first elected to that position in 2009.

During the campaign, Dixon had been critical of Poloncarz when it came to county roads and county taxes. She has accused him of raising taxes.

The total levy has gone up, due to higher assessments and new construction, but the county's tax rate has gone down.

"A tax rate was what we could count as success at that point, because there was an opportunity. There was not the opportunity to provide an actual tax levy cut," Dixon said.

During the campaign, Dixon and Poloncarz candidates clashed on a wide array of topics, including county taxes and roads. Dixon has been critical of Poloncarz, putting out an ad that accused him of bad management of the county's infrastructure.

In an October debate last month between the candidates that aired on Channel 2, in partnership with WNED, WBFO, and the Buffalo News, Dixon called Poloncarz a bully.
