Collins declares victory for NY-27 congressional seat

The race for the NY-27 congressional seat is close, but it appears Chris Collins will win the seat.

BUFFALO, NY-- The race for the NY-27 congressional seat is close, but it appears Chris Collins will win the seat.

With just 91% of the precincts reporting, Rep. Chris Collins has 124,351 votes (50%), while Democratic challenger Nate McMurray has 121,655 (48%) votes.

Collins said, " I am re-elected and that's all it matters." Collins also said he will continue to support President Donald Trump.

LATEST: 2018 Election results

Nate McMurray addressed supporters at 11pm saying he came up short.

Collins watched results in an office in downtown Buffalo. We spoke to him just after he voted. He said he was confident he would retain his seat in Congress.

As the heaviest Republican district in the state, no one thought this race would be close.

Then Republican Rep. Chris Collins, 68, was indicted on insider trading charges earlier this year.

He won't stand trial until 2020, but that hasn't impacted his poll numbers.

Collins, the first member of the House to endorse then-candidate Trump, is facing declining popularity and a surging opponent in Nate McMurray, 43, who trails the incumbent by just 3 percentage points: 46 percent to 43 percent, according to the latest Siena poll.

The district, which includes Orleans, Wyoming, Genesee and Livingston Counties, went for Trump by 24 percentage points in 2016.
