4.5% of registered Erie County voters hit polls early this year

More than 26,500 ballots were cast during the state's first-ever early voting period, which lasted 9 days.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Early voting is now complete, and more than 26,500 ballots were in Erie County cast during the nine-day period.

Erie County Board of Elections Commissioners Ralph Mohr and Jeremy Zellner said Sunday that 26,514 took advantage of early voting. That's 4.5 percent of the county's 596,230 registered voters.

The board of elections said 3,469 people voted on Sunday. There were 37 total polling sites, with locations in every Erie County city and town.

The general election is Tuesday. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.

In Chautauqua County, more than 3,800 voters out of 76,762 registered active voters turned out during the early period. Election commissioners Norman Green and Brian Abram said 6 percent of all registered voters did so either through the early voting period or by absentee.
