Batavia standoff ends in arrest of 45-year-old man

Police responded to a domestic call on Monday and ended up in a 20 hour standoff with an armed resident.

BATAVIA, N.Y. — The Batavia Police Department responded to a domestic call on Monday that evolved into a 20-hour standoff with an armed suspect.

Genesee County dispatched Batavia Police to 209 Liberty Street around 1:18 p.m. for a domestic call reporting that an intoxicated man, in possession of a sword, had hit a woman. Police say the woman had escaped to a neighbor's house, but the man was still inside when police arrived.

The man, later identified as Daniel Wolfe, 45, was a resident of the upper apartment at 209 Liberty Street. Wolfe allegedly shot at police with a BB gun when they reached the scene.

Batavia Police Negotiators, two K9 units, New York State Police, and the Batavia Emergency Response Team joined the scene, where negotiators were able to make verbal contact with Wolfe. Wolfe refused to leave the residence and allegedly told police that he wanted officers to kill him.

The Genesee County Sheriff's K9 Frankie entered the residence, but Wolfe tried to slash the dog with a knife. A handler then removed the K9 from the situation.

Police also tried to force Wolfe out of the residence using chemical agents and by locating him in the residence using robots and drones.

Neighbors sheltered in place during the standoff, while Batavia Police set up a perimeter around the residence. Police notified the Batavia City School District, which has an elementary school within blocks of the residence.

Wolfe surrendered to police after 20 hours.

Police say Wolfe was treated at Strong Hospital for self-inflicted injuries that occurred during the standoff and upon release arrested by Batavia Police. No one else was injured during the incident.

Wolfe has been charged with criminal contempt in the first degree, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, menacing in the second degree and harassment in the second degree. Police say other charges are pending.

Wolfe was arraigned in Batavia City Court on Tuesday, and will reappear in Batavia City Court on Thursday. He is being held without bail in Genesee County Jail.
