Police seize multiple limo plates after crash that killed 20

The seizures effectively sidelined the vehicles and came at the request of the state transportation and motor vehicle officials.

New York State Police say they began seizing plates from unauthorized limousines after an October crash in upstate New York that killed 20 people.

The Times Union of Albany reports police seized the plates of 59 vehicles after the Oct. 6 crash in Schoharie County, west of Albany.

The seizures effectively sidelined the vehicles and came at the request of the state transportation and motor vehicle officials. State officials refused to tell the newspaper which limo companies had their license plates pulled or why the actions weren't taken previously.

Prosecutors allege limousine company operator Nauman Hussain in October allowed an improperly licensed driver to operate an "unserviceable" vehicle. He has pleaded not guilty to criminally negligent homicide.

The accident also is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.
