Saturday is the last day to redeem Toys R Us gift cards.

After stores close for the day April 21, the cards will be worthless.

In bankruptcy, retailers technically don't have to honor gift cards at all. But most ask a bankruptcy court judge for permission to do so — at least for a while.

Toys R Us has been honoring gift cards since it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September. But once the New Jersey-based company filed to liquidate its U.S. operations, the end was near.

"Use those gift cards ASAP," the Better Business Bureau advises in its tips for “Going Out of Business” sales. "Businesses that have entered into the liquidation process will not be around for very long and BBB advises consumers who are holding gift cards spend them as soon as possible or risk getting stuck with a worthless piece of plastic."

Tips for shopping liquidation sales

Besides using up your gift cards, here are other ways to make sure you’re getting the best deal at liquidation sales:

  • Important: All sales are final. If you end up buying something you don’t want, try recouping your money by selling it.
  • Be prepared: Prices at liquidation sales are not always the lowest you can find, especially at the beginning.
  • Compare prices: Do a Google search or use a price comparison website or a smartphone app like ShopSavvy, which is available for Apple and Android. Also scan product bar codes with the Amazon, Target and Walmart apps.
  • Check the product thoroughly: Open the box, look for damage and make sure all parts, accessories, instructions, warranty information and other items that should be included.
  • Use a credit card: If you experience any problems, this will give you a way to contest the charge.
  • Warranties: Check warranty details and find out where repairs can be made. Closing stores typically continue to sell extended warranties.
  • Go often: If you have your heart set on an item, swing by the store weekly. Tag team with a friend and share your lists with each other.
  • More info: For questions about products or warranties, call 1-800-TOYSRUS or 1-800-869-7787 between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. Warning, expect long waits and aggravation.
