Move Over Day: New York issues reminder to drivers across state

State Police issued more than 13,000 Move Over Law violations in 2018.

ALBANY, N.Y. — Governor Cuomo is reminding drivers to move over for emergency vehicles on the side of the road.

Saturday is National Move Over Day, a time the governor is using to emphasize the importance of drivers slowing down and giving workers and first responders space to work safely on the roads.

New York's Move Over Law was enacted in 2011, and in 2018 state police issued more than 13,000 violations.

Violators can face two points on their license and a minimum $150 fine.

State law requires motorists to drive carefully, slow down and cautiously move over when nearing law enforcement vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks and construction vehicles stopped along roads around the state.

"Police, highway workers, tow truck drivers and emergency responders risk their lives every day so that we can drive across New York safely," Governor Cuomo said in a statement earlier this week, ahead of Move Over Day.

"For everyone's sake, I urge motorists to heed the Move Over Law and use common sense. When you see an emergency or hazard vehicle along the highway, slow down and have the courtesy to move your vehicle over a lane to give those brave men and women room to work."
