Tonawanda Fire Dept. gets $359K federal grant

Congressman Brian Higgins was at the city's fire department Tuesday to announce more than $350,000 in federal firefighting grants.

CITY OF TONAWANDA, NY - The folks who help keep the City of Tonawanda safe have some more money and resources to do just that.

Congressman Brian Higgins was at the city's fire department Tuesday to announce more than $359,000 in federal firefighting grants.

They'll be using the money to hire two firefighters whose positions were phased out after two retirements a few years ago.

"Now that may not sound like a lot," says City of Tonawanda Fire Chief Charles Stuart, "but in a small department like ours where we maintain a skeleton crew it's gonna be extremely helpful."

That money will cover salaries and benefits for the new firefighters over the next three years.

And they're hoping that the financial situation will let them keep the firefighters on after the grant ends.
