BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Stella Usiak and Lucas Lowe found love and friendship as they both bravely battle leukemia together. Melissa Holmes shared their story with us last month. Friday night, Stella and Lucas, along with dozens of other young men and women with cancer and cancer survivors, went to the prom.
We caught up with the young couple as they got ready for their big night.
"I asked if he would be my Valentine," says Stella.
"I said yes," said Lucas.
"A day later he called me up and he said well would you be my girlfriend," says Stella.
So it should be no surprise that Stella also asked Lucas to be her prom date. The two have been inseparable since meeting at Roswell while undergoing treatment for leukemia.
But being able to go to the Teens Living with Cancer Prom and pre-prom party at Roswell took on even more meaning after the date almost didn't happen.
"I was afraid I wasn't going to make it to prom. I fell last week Thursday," says Stella.
A phone call with Lucas made things better.
"He calmed me down and it was at the perfect time and it was really nice," said Stella.
"I'm like no what's the point of me going to prom if you're not going to go. It's about you and me," said Lucas.
Luckily, Stella's doctor gave her the okay to go.
"I get to hang out with my friends and do normal kid activities," said Stella.
And that's important because, right now, Lucas' leukemia is in remission and Stella can't go anywhere in public where there's a chance she could get sick.
"I'm still on immunosuppressants. I'm still taking chemotherapy. We were hoping that it all would be over by now, but I mean you gotta stay positive. I mean, I have Lucas and so I can, I'm taking him to prom," says Stella.
Stella and Lucas were able to spend the night hanging out with friends, listening to music, and sampling treats from the candy bar on their first fancy date as a couple.
"I've never been to a prom. No one's ever asked me to a prom, so I'm a little anxious to see what's going on," says Lucas.
Stella turns 13 on Sunday, so this was also an early birthday celebration for her. Lucas turns 13 in August. Stella says she likes sharing her story because she wants to raise awareness about pediatric cancer.
