St. Luke's seeks help preparing Thanksgiving, Christmas meals

The independent mission is separate from the diocese and depends solely on donations to be able to provide its services for those in need.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — St. Luke's Mission of Mercy is getting ready to prepare more than 112,000 meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but is still in need of some help.

The independent mission is separate from the diocese and depends solely on donations to be able to provide its services for those in need.

St. Luke's says it costs about a dollar per meal, so the donations go a long way.

"We have about 50,000 now. We need 60,000 more, and we have 60 days to do it in," said Amy Bertos, St. Luke's co-founder and director.

"And we have wonderful, wonderful people in Western New York, and they're very generous."

Each family at Thanksgiving will receive three bags of food. Those bags will include a whole chicken, stuffing, carrots, onions, cabbage, yams, potatoes, rolls, and a dessert of brownie mix and cookies.

Each family at Christmas will receive a bag that includes seven meals, taking into consideration that children are away from school for a longer period of time.
