Saturday marks 80th Anniversary of Honeymoon Bridge Collapse

The Niagara Regional Programs Department hosted a historical presentation about the Honeymoon Bridge in honor of the 80th anniversary of its collapse.

NIAGARA FALLS, NY -- Saturday marked the 80th anniversary of the collapse of the Honeymoon Bridge, and The Niagara Regional Programs Department hosted a historical presentation in its honor.

Due to the close proximity of the abutments of the bridge to the surface of the river, they had to constantly be protected from the ice bridges that formed in the Lower Niagara River every winter.

One environmental educator at the event, Carol Rogers, said, "When that bridge was built, we did not have automobile traffic and we did not have truck traffic...And by 1938, could the increase in the industrialization, international transportation, more people coming to Niagara Falls...could that have all led up to weakening the bridges? The ice ended up being 80 - 100 feet thick, engulfed the bridge, and just tore it down."

Three people died from the collapse on that fateful day, back in 1938.
