Purple Heart documents from 1944 returned to family of soldier

Several months ago, the U.S. Postal Service reached out Congressman Brian Higgins after finding the original documents.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A special presentation was made to a World War II prisoner of war's family on Saturday.

Several months ago, the U.S. Postal Service reached out Congressman Brian Higgins after finding original Purple Heart documents from 1944.

They wanted to make sure that the documents were safely returned to the relatives of Corporal Henry Mazurkiewicz.

Congressman Higgins was able to put together a basic family tree.

In August, Higgins put out a public call for the community's help to find his family members.

After seeing news reports, the family came forward and was presented with Corporal Mazurkiewicz's Purple Heart certificate on Saturday.

Higgins has also requested that Corporal Mazurkiewicz be added to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor.
