Possible measles exposure at Williamsville South High School

The Erie County Health Department has confirmed with 2 On Your Side that they are investigating a possible measles exposure that may have occurred at Williamsville South High School on Friday, December 14.

There will be two letters sent out to Williamsville South High School parents/students and employees as a health notice. 

The district released the following statement Monday evening:

The Williamsville Central School District was notified by the Erie County Department of Health today, December 17, 2018, that it is investigating a possible measles exposure that may have occurred at Williamsville South High School on Friday, December 14, 2018. It is important to know that there is not a confirmed case of measles at Williamsville South.

Following the recommendation from the health department, as a precautionary measure, the district has notified the parents and guardians of South students, and employees about the ECDOH investigation regarding possible exposure.

Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein told 2 On Your Side Tuesday that the department is looking into a person who had close contact with the person who developed measles in Erie County last week.

The person in this new possible case in vaccinated and hasn't developed the disease, but did go to school.

"Individuals who were at Williamsville South that day have a very low risk of being exposed to somebody who may eventually get measles because we believe this close contact will not develop measles," said Burstein. "However, I can't say that there is 0% chance risk."

Burstein added that they are warning people because the vaccine is 97% effective, in case anyone at the school is vulnerable and not vaccinated.

She says they haven't found any secondary cases of measles after that first one last week.
