BUFFALO, NY - A handful of communities around the state are joining a movement to recognize Native Americans on the federal holiday known as Columbus Day.
There's a petition going around in support of changing Columbus Day to Indigenous Heritage Day here in Buffalo.
So far close to 1,000 people have signed the petition.
The petition mentions that Buffalo has a strong history of Native American culture, and it‘s time the city reflects that.
The petition will eventually be passed along to the Common Council and Mayor Byron Brown. This comes after the Town of Newstead celebrated its first Indigenous Peoples Day in October.
