CLARENCE, N.Y. -- This week's "Great Kid" is girl from Clarence who is a competitive athlete, an entrepreneur and now a published author, and she's only 9 years old.
Outside the pool, she's your average, fun-loving, and goofy girl. But when it's time to hit the water, Luciana Alessi is all business. She's focused, disciplined and talented.
"For the breast stroke it's her dominant stroke," said Luciana's father, Dr. Derek Alessi. "She is better than girls 2, 3, 4 years older than her."
Luciana, or Lucy, trains 4 days each week, swimming with the Park Country Club team and the Buffalo Area Aquatic Club at the University at Buffalo. She says she has loved the water for as long as she can remember.
"I never gave my parents a hard time about going in the water and I just really liked it," Lucy said.
Her father agrees.
"She never fights us to swim. Other things like doing her homework, without question she does. But for swimming, she likes it," Dr. Alessi said.
Now the competitive swimmer can add author and entrepreneur to her list of accomplishments. She took her catch phrase: "BRB (Be right back) I need to go to swim practice" and put it on her own line of swim caps and t-shirts. It became the title of her own book, which is subtitled "A Girl's Guide to Competition, Confidence, and Fun Through Swimming."
Her hope is to inspire other girls to find a passion and then pursue it and persevere.
"I want them to not be afraid when they step up on that starting block. Just try and don't give up," Lucy said.
Her father, who owns Dr. Derek Health and Fitness and is often featured on Channel 2, and Lucy's mother, couldn't be more proud.
"I'm extremely proud of Luciana for doing this," he said. "For number 1: getting into swimming and excelling with swimming. Number 2: to really committing herself to it. And number 3: in terms of putting your thoughts together in a book for a 9-year-old is tough so I'm extremely proud that she's accomplished all of those things."
