JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- A man from Jamestown turned himself into police Thursday afternoon after admitting in a recorded interview that he is the person responsible for a dog found hanging from a tree earlier this week.

Robert Overton said the dog became aggressive on three separate occasions, one involving his young daughter and that he made a 'life or death decision, choosing my kids over the animal."

Overton said he also had his pregnant wife to be concerned about. Overton went on to claim the female dog had also been 'acting sickly'. He says he feels bad that the circumstances ended up the way they did.

Overton is charged with a felony count of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals. He is currently in the Jamestown City Jail awaiting arraignment. Police said their investigation revealed the 47-year-old allegedly hanged the dog from the tree in late November or early December.

Investigators say a passerby noticed a brown and white pit bull hanging on a red leash and blue nylon rope in a wooded area on Hallock Street on Monday.

Police have fielded numerous calls about people wanting to donate money toward a reward for information on a suspect. The department suggests that anyone wanting to make donations should instead make donations to their local SPCA or to the Pick of The Litter animal shelter in Falconer.
