Main St. Near Buffalo Med Campus Paving Priority

Buffalo, NY - A stretch of Main Street near the Buffalo - Niagara Medical Campus is a primary focus this road construction season. But millions more are earmarked for another part of Main Street extending north towards the Canisius College campus.

Buffalo, NY - With talk of all the new development and new buildings, the city of Buffalo likes to showcase the new medical campus corridor as a prime example of the resurgence But now city officials have to repair another element that could really affect that shiny image. That's the pothole riddled, bumpy stretch of Main Street through that area.

Car owners are only too willing to share their opinion of the road conditions that batter their vehicles....

One man says "It's a war zone...everywhere I go you have to dodge and weave. Wherever you know. The only thing that's good about my situation is my car is under warranty but you know I'm thinking about peolple that don't have warranties on their cars." Another points out "It could be better...could be a lot better. It's raggedy...they need to do a lot."

Besides the potholes and bumpy road surface there is also plenty of uneven pavement from utility work near the parking lane.

Mayor Brown and other city officials acknowledge it's bad. In fact about $300,000 dollars alone is earmarked for just a one block stretch of Main between High and Carlton Streets. Much of that damage came from the heavy construction equipment used to put up those new buildings. There was lots of pavement pounding in recent years for all that construction and it takes a toll on the road.

But it's not just the hospital area of Main Street. The city says millions more in funding will be applied in the next couple of years to help smooth out Main Street heading north towards the Canisius College campus.

We wanted to pinpoint a timetable for the repaving work on Main but Buffalo Public Works Commissioner Steve Stepniak was not available to do an on camera interview. He does say the stretch of Main Street near the Medical Campus is in the pipeline this year to be done. He says they do have to check some of the underground areas to make sure there's no obstructions. He is sure there won't be and he says this part of Main Street will be done this season before the snow flies.
