Judge gives Chunk the pitbull a second chance

A judge decided on Tuesday that Chunk the pitbull will not be euthanized.

CONCORD, N.Y. — A Town of Concord judge decided Tuesday that Chunk the pitbull will not be euthanized for biting a U.S. Postal Service worker. Chunk's owner, Jacqueline Wilk, says this is the first time Chunk was ever violent; however, the letter carrier sought medical treatment following the incident.

Chunk was given a somewhat clean slate following a hearing in October. He was allowed to go home temporarily, but was then taken to a kennel to be evaluated.

Following a new evaluation and another hearing, the judge decided that Chunk must be microchipped, and will be subjected to other limitations for the next 30 days.

Chunk will have to adhere to a strict set of regulations over the next few weeks. Chunk's owner will have to build an enclosure around the yard and keep him on a leash no longer than 30 feet when he is on the property.

When Chunk is out with his owner, he will have to be on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Chunk won't be allowed to go outside his owner's home without human supervision.

He will have to complete the Canine Good Citizen training outlined by the American Kennel Club, which must be completed within the next six months. He is also required to have multiple behavioral evaluations over the next two years to make sure he is still complaint with his training.

Chunk's owner and attorney said they were satisfied with the outcome and were optimistic about being able to complete the requirements.
