BUFFALO, N.Y. -- About 1,700 freshman have enrolled at Buffalo State this fall, and many of them started the move-in process Tuesday.

The class of 2020 is the third-largest group of incoming freshman in 25 years, according to a news release from the college.

The number is down slightly from last year and the year before, where 1,892 and 1,875 freshman respectively enrolled for the semester.

However, with more than 13,800 students applying to Buffalo State for the fall 2016 semester, it marks the second-highest applicant pool among SUNY comprehensive colleges, college officials say.

Demand also remains high for on-campus housing this fall as requests have exceeded capacity. About 100 Buffalo State students will live in residence halls at Medaille College.

After a two-day orientation starting Wednesday, classes for the fall semester start Monday, Aug. 29.
