BUFFALO, NY--- Buffalo Police have charged a person they say is responsible for smashing a statue outside a Catholic church on the city's East side.
Kalil Colbert, 18, of Buffalo is charged with Criminal Mischief, Aggravated Harassment, and Hate Crime/ Aggravated Harassment.
Police got a 911 call about 11 P.M. Tuesday night to report the damage at St. John Kanty Church on Broadway.
Father Michael Burzynski, parish administrator, says a note found by the statue was turned over to police.
The statue, almost 5' tall had it's face and hands smashed. It sat on a marble base in an area known as the 'Mary Garden'.
George Richert, spokesperson for the Diocese, says the statue will be replaced.
