Buffalo natives living elsewhere come home

When ex-patriots come home, they are amazed at the changes in areas of Buffalo.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — There's nothing like seeing a sign that says "Welcome to Buffalo" when you're driving home for the holiday.

Many ex-patriots are home and noticing a new Buffalo. So many new buildings and activities have popped up since they last lived in the Queen City.

Jonathan Rias is a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force serving in Germany. He hasn't been home in two years. While standing on Delaware Avenue, he looked around and noticed a different scenery.

"You got the Westin, the last time I was here it was a burger joint I think, now it's a fancy hotel and Delaware North headquarters," he said.

Hugging her brother with pride, Clarissa Rias will take her brother to explore the local beers. "There's a lot of great craft beer places. He enjoys beer a lot since he's been in Germany."

Joe Greer was born and raised in WNY. A graduate of Canisius High School and Canisius College. After 30+ years away, he and his family are relocating to Buffalo. It was an opportunity to be Director of Sales at Modern Corporation that brought him back and he is very impressed with Buffalo.

"There just wasn't a lot of opportunity for college graduates unless you had a family business to come to, now you come back and you see all the things going on," he said. "You can see the activity going on, the resurgence, there are shovels in the ground, cranes and on Main Street with the hospital center there's a lot of activity."

Monique Gary-Porter moved to North Carolina. When she returns home, she's a little shocked at all of the changes.

"Im on social media and when I started seeing people doing live feeds from Canalside I was like, 'What is this?' I see the progression in Buffalo so it is definitely different."

No matter how far away natives live, they are proud to call Buffalo home and proud of all of the changes for the good in the city and region.
