Blasdell cancels Memorial Day Parade citing road condition

Officials in the Village of Blasdell have decided to cancel their traditional Memorial Day Parade, citing the poor condition of Lake Avenue.

VILLAGE OF BLASDELL, NY - Officials in the Village of Blasdell have decided to cancel their traditional Memorial Day Parade, citing the poor condition of Lake Avenue, which is now scheduled for a major reconstruction project next year.

The Hamburg Sun reports the Village is frustrated and disappointed - but did not want to risk any injury for any participants marching in the parade.

"Mayor Rob Hefner just believed it was best not to actually march the parade this year," said Hamburg SUn Editor Mike Petro. "They are gonna have a bit of ceremony Sunday a week from today over on Arthur Avenue to still have something but safety-wise they just don't think it's right to do it this year in terms of the march of it."

That ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. at the former Blasdell Library.

And Erie County Highway Commissioner Bill Geary says there is a major reconstruction project planned for Lake Avenue in 2019, with concurrent utility line and pipe work done by Erie County Water Authority and the sewer department.

Geary says they can try to do some patching work on a temporary basis, but the parade is still cancelled.
