BATAVIA, N.Y. — In the wake of several cases of credit card fraud in the City of Batavia, the Batavia Police Department is telling businesses to be on the lookout.

Police say the suspect does not have a physical credit card, instead they ask the sales clerk to type in the credit card numbers manually. The transactions are initially approved; however, the payment is then declined nearly a month later.

Business insurance typically does not cover these types of transactions, leaving businesses with the cost.

To prevent this fraud from continuing, police are advising businesses to only accept physical credit cards. Batavia Police also advise checking the individual's ID to see if the name on the card matches.

Anyone with information about these incidents can contact Detective Sgt. Matthew Lutey at (585) 345-6365. You can also contact the Batavia Police Department at (585) 345-6350 or their confidential tip line at (585) 345-6370.
