NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. -- Officials say a small chlorine leak set off alarms Tuesday night at the North Tonawanda wastewater treatment plant.

It happened around 10:20 Tuesday night at the plant on River Road. According to the North Tonawanda Fire Department the room where the leak occurred was evacuated and the workers were moved to a safe distance.

Officials temporarily closed off an area of River Road between Wheatfield Street and Felton Street while crews worked to contain and clean-up the leak. Residents in the area were told to stay inside and keep their windows closed. Officials gave the all clear around midnight and reopened the roads.

North Tonawanda Mayor Arthuir Pappas and the fire department tells 2 On Your Side that the public was never in any danger and that the actions taken last night were precautionary.
