BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Erie County Sheriff's Department and Bomb Squad seized an estimated $75,000 worth of illegal fireworks in a raid Wednesday.
Earlier Wednesday morning, an anonymous tip led them to a self-storage unit on William St. where they found 55-year-old Fred Penturiero selling the fireworks.
"Fireworks are dangerous in the wrong hands," "The storage system that was used here was extremely inappropriate. A fire in any one of these storage units could've caused them to ignite, doing substantial damage to these buildings and the people in the neighborhood," said Sheriff Timothy Howard.
The amount of fireworks that were packed into the area was highly dangerous, considering the metal storage unit and the recent lightning from storms in the area.
The Bomb Squad will dispose of the fireworks as soon as possible. Penturiero faces a felony charge for possession and storage of fireworks.
