Man arrested at Peace Bridge pleads guilty to bank fraud

Prosecutors say the Florida man took part in a scheme that used skimming devices on gas pumps to to obtain bank card information of customers.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Cuban native living in Miami, Florida, pleaded guilty to bank fraud on Monday in U.S. District Court, according to the office of U.S. Attorney James Kennedy.

Jorge Alberto Alvarez, 35, faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine. He was arrested on October 10, 2018, when entering the country at the Peace Bridge, where officials found him with 93 counterfeit access devices, 16 gas pump skimming devices, and other equipment.

Prosecutors say Alvarez took part in a scheme that used skimming devices on gas pumps to to obtain bank card information of customers, and that he used the information to later fraudulently obtain money.

U.S. attorneys say Alvarez acquired bank card information for about 131 different accounts, and that he produced 93 counterfeit access devices to withdraw money from accounts between October 10, 2017, and the same date in 2018.

He is scheduled to be sentenced at 1 p.m. August 28 before District Judge Richard J. Ancara.
