Dunkirk Police: man charged after car chase that left city limits

DUNKIRK, N.Y. — A report of a stolen vehicle led Dunkirk Police on a chase that left city limits at point before ending in the city Thursday morning.

Dustin S. Barrett, 25, of Dunkirk faces a number of charges, according to Dunkirk Police:

  • Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle
  • Felony reckless endangerment
  • Three counts of felony grand larceny
  • Felony criminal possession of stolen property
  • Felony criminal possession of a weapon
  • Unlawful fleeing in a motor vehicle

Dunkirk Police say it all began at the The Resource Center on Lakeshore Drive, with a report of a stolen vehicle at 8:51 a.m. While there police say the SUV in question was traveling east on Lakeshore Drive and attempted to stop it on West Third Street.

Police say the driver refused to stop, and a chase soon followed. At one point, police say Barrett had driven out of the city before returning.

The chase ended around 9:30 a.m. on Franklin Avenue.

New York State Police, Fredonia Police and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department assisted.

Barrett was arraigned in Dunkirk City Court and later released.
