Angola mailman admits to stealing mail

Theft of mail matter by a postal employee is a charge carrying a max of five years behind bars and a $250,000 fine.

BUFFALO, NY - An Angola mailman has admitted to stealing mail from residents.

Thomas Cyphert, 65, of Angola, pleaded guilty in court Tuesday before U.S. District Judge Richard Arcara.

Theft of mail matter by a postal employee carries a maximum sentencing of five years behind bars and a $250,000 fine.

Invstigators say Cyphert was discovered when employees at the Hamburg Post Office saw what looked like undelivered mail in his car - which a search revealed was correct. Cyphert had 14 tubs of undelivered mail in his car, and 27 additional tubs in his home, totaling over 1,500 pieces of mail, according to authorities.

Cyphert is set to be sentenced in March.
