Amherst Police warn residents of scam involving gift cards

They say demands for the purchase of a gift card to settle debts or to avoid arrest will not be done by police departments or governmental agencies.

AMHERST, N.Y. — Amherst Police on Friday alerted residents of a scam where the suspect identifies himself as a police officer.

Police there say "the initial call was automated and reported to be from a federal agency." Yet according to police, another call showed the Amherst Police Department's phone number on a victim's caller ID.

Amherst Police said demands for the purchase of a gift card to settle debts or to avoid arrest will not be done by police departments or governmental agencies, either in their town or elsewhere.

If you receive a phone call of this nature, Amherst Police encourage you to hang up and immediately call your local police to provide information.
