Concerns about Bishop Malone participating in Canisius College's graduation mass

Several students expressed their concerns on behalf of the senior class in connection with Malone's response to the sex abuse crisis.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canisius College President John Hurley is defending his decision to involve Bishop Richard Malone in a mass for graduating seniors on Thursday.

Several students expressed their concerns on behalf of the senior class in connection with Malone's response to the sex abuse crisis.

Hurley launched the movement to restore trust, which issued recommendations to the diocese. In an email to graduating seniors, Hurley said in part:

"To Malone's credit... he has accepted our recommendations and formed a joint implementation team to begin the process of reform."

Hurley also said in the email:

"Since Bishop Malone has stepped up to the challenge and has created some real opportunity for reform and renewal... it is impossible for me to tell him he is not welcome on our campus."
