Buffalo wants to help property owners in danger of foreclosure

The foreclosure assistance program runs until October 25, and any payment arrangements need to be finalized with a down payment.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Hundreds of homes and businesses are in danger of foreclosure, and the City of Buffalo is taking steps to help the owners of those properties.

Mayor Byron Brown is continuing the annual Foreclosure Assistance Program and wants people to take advantage of the opportunity. More than 400 homes have already been removed from the city's foreclosure list, but there are still more that need attention.

"The city never wants to take anyone's property. One of the reasons why we do the foreclosure assistance program annually," Brown told 2 On Your Side.

The city will send up to seven notices to a property owner.

Anyone who wants to check the status of their property can go to the Department of Tax and Assessment located in City Hall. The Open Data Buffalo website also has the full property foreclosure list.

Through the Foreclosure Assistance Program, people can make a payment arrangement to save their properties. People can make appointments by calling (716) 851-4343.

Local legal services are being provided by the Volunteer Lawyers Project, Western New York Law Center, Legal Aid, and Center for Elder Law and Justice.

The foreclosure assistance program runs until October 25, and any payment arrangements need to be finalized with a down payment by then to keep properties from being auctioned.

The Foreclosure Auction is on the October 29.
