Camp helps bridge gap between teens and deputies

ANGOLA, N.Y. — A new bond has now been formed between a group of teenagers and Erie County Sheriff's deputies after spending a week together at summer camp.

The National Federation for Just Community of WNY, Inc. and the sheriff's department hosted its 36th Annual Sheriff Youth Live-in Camp. For a week, younger leaders in grades seventh through tenth spent a week at Cradle Beach Camp. Deputies served as the teens' counselors.

Organizers said over the course of five days, the group had a chance to enjoy fun activities such as camp fires, swimming, and hiking. But they also had a chance to bridge the divide between the two groups.

"They also have very meaningful dialogue," NFJC President Lana Benatovich said. "They sit in circle and talk about how they can help in their schools and in their profession to bring people together with compassion, understanding, and unification. "

The camp was free for all participants.
